Our acacia utensils are carved from a single piece of solid wood, with no glue, and finished with two natural layers:
- A light, cotton-based water lacquer on the surface. It's plant-based, made from cotton, not petroleum, and it protects the wood while it travels to you.
- Our own beeswax blend underneath: mainly beeswax and flaxseed oil, with carnauba wax and lemon oil.
No mineral oil, no petrochemicals, no solvents, synthetic resins or preservatives.
Why does the finish wear off?
That's by design. The light lacquer is meant to wash off little by little over the first washes. From then on, what protects the wood is conditioning, so recondition every three to four weeks if you cook with them often, or whenever the wood looks pale or dry, with a natural, petroleum-free wood conditioner, like a beeswax blend with plant oils. See "Before the first use: are my wooden utensils ready?".
Some spots look duller or less finished
Because the lacquer is so light and each piece is natural wood, the sheen can vary a little from piece to piece and even within a piece. A thin coat of conditioner evens it out. If a piece has a rough patch, splinters or a split, write to help@ziruma.com with your order number and a photo, and we'll make it right.
